Peter Stuart Ney was a school teacher in the Carolinas, settling in the Davidson region toward the end of his life. He designed the Davidson College seal. It is rumored that he was also Napoleon's Marshal Michel Ney of France, who had somehow escaped his execution and fled to America. From the description of Collection, 1842-1992. Michel Ney was one of 18 Marshals of France under Napoleon. He participated in the French invasion of and retreat from Russia in 1812 and earned himself the nickname of "Le Rougeaud, le Brave des Braves" (the bravest of the brave) from Napoleon.
